Matter Squared LLC | Ed Tech Startup

Matter² aspires to grow K-12 strings education in the U.S. by offering technology-enhanced versions of common string instrument accessories—shoulder rests and end-pins—I developed and have licensed from Arizona State University. With the help of an ASU award and a committed research team, we intensively beta-tested for 18 months and discovered the joy we can bring to young musicians. With a recent startup award, we’re now pushing towards commercialization.

$30K Ed Tech Startup Grant

Seth Thorn of Matter Squared LLC (pictured left) was awarded $30,000 of startup funding at the inaugural ASU Fulton Engineering “Lab to Launch” pitch competition hosted at Skysong Innovations in March 2024. The grant comes from three donors: Hool Law Group, Good Work Capital Challenge (Steve Lockard of TPI Composites, pictured center), and Impact AZ. The funds will go toward product commercialization and further development. Tremendous thanks to Justin Mitchell (pictured right) and others for developing and supporting this unique event.

This project has been a wellspring of creative energy for me. Developing the CAD designs in the beginning was very exciting and I learned a lot, but now I’m focused on getting the mobile app just right—ostensibly simple, but with a lot of depth—which I’m developing in Xcode using AudioKit and RNBO.
